While a few years ago the narrow valley between the Ötztal and Kaunertal valleys was regarded as an insider tip for free riders, but since the free rider contest “Pitztal Wild Face” became a two-star-qualifier of the Free ride World Tour, it is now widely known that Pitztal offers spectacular downhill runs in a ski resort of superlatives.
Its altitude already speaks volumes. When in lower regions the first snow flakes just begin to fall, free riders are already rocking down pristine hills on Pitztal Glacier. The 3,440 metre Hintere Brunnenkogel peak, Tyrol’s and indeed Austria’s highest glacial ski resort, already offers natural snow and powder galore in those early winter months.
As soon as the “white gold” advances down into the valley, the small neighbouring ski resort Rifflsee springs to life. At Grubenkar wide slopes alternate with steep gullies while fans of tree runs find happiness at Hirschtal – a qualifying section of the Wild Face race.
Regardless of each free rider’s ability, Pitztal is perfect for everyone. Runs with 1,500 metres elevation gain can be reached without having to climb. While the professionals tend to prefer the steep gullies and cirques of Pitztal glacier around the prominent Mittagskogel peak, beginners can refine their technique comfortably near the glacier pistes or in the neighbouring Rifflsee ski resort.
A few kilometres further along the valley, high above the entrance to the valley in Jerzens, the Hochzeiger ski resort awaits with wide, sun-kissed hillsides – especially suited to powder ski novices wanting to try their first turns in pristine powder snow.
Tip for beginners: Are you a free ride beginner? Our “Pitztal Freeride Camp” is an ideal way to have ski guides of the Freeride Center Pitztal show you the best and safest lines.
Event tip for free riding whizzes: The free riding scene meets in Pitztal for Pitztal Wild Face, the world’s hardest free riding race. The fastest riders of the qualifying round through the Hirschgraben start at the Mittagskogel peak. Witnessing the race as a spectator alone is also very worthwhile, taking in the sporty and relaxed ambience at Pitztal glacier. Bookings and further information: www.pitztal-wildface.com.
