Follow the agricultural road from Rehwald to the catered mountain hut Mauchele Alm. From there turn off on a trail towards Lake Brechsee which you will reach within 1 hour from the hut. It is another 1 hour 30 minutes walk to Lake Krummersee. After 50 minutes you reach the Lake Kugletersee. Return to the start via the same route.
E5 Alternative hiking route along the valley: Scheibe – Braunschweiger Hütte

From your starting point follow the valley hiking trail [Talwanderweg] into the valley to Mittelberg. This is an easy hike along the bottom of the valley. From Mittelberg the hike will get more difficult. Follow the agricultural road in the direction of the catered mountain hut Gletscherstube for the last 1,000 metres in altitude. The road then leads to a steep path up to the catered mountain hut Braunschweiger Hütte.

Take the Venetbahn gondola up the first section and then follow the path to the first summit, the so called Glanderspitze. Once there, continue hiking along the ridge across the Wannejöchl until you reach the Kreuzjoch. Follow the path downhill in the direction of the catered mountain hut Larcher Alm. When the path joins a forest road turn left to Larcher Alm, which is an ideal stop for some refreshments. Continue hiking along the so called alter Almweg (old trail) past the Winkl hamlet to the village centre of Wenns. From there, catch the public bus to Mittelberg Wendestelle [turning bay] bus stop. Follow the agricultural road in the direction of the catered mountain hut Gletscherstube for the last 1,000 metres in altitude. The road then leads to a steep path up to the catered mountain hut Braunschweiger Hütte. You have reached your destination for the day!
E5 Venet circular trail variant

For all those who wish to master the E5 without using any public transport or mountain railways the hike starts at the valley station of Venetbahn gondola in Zams. Ascend to the top station of Venethbahn following the Ladner Steig trail. Once there, follow the panoramic trail to the catered mountain hut Gogles Alm at 2,017 metres above sea level. Continue on the path behind the hut towards the catered mountain hut Galflun Alm. Once there, descend to the catered mountain hut Larcher Alm and continue along the so called alter Almweg [old mountain hut trail]. This trail passes the hamlet of Winkl and leads to the village centre of Wenns, which is your destination for this day.
E5 Zams - Piller

Take Venetbahn gondola up the first section of the hike and then follow the panoramic path to the catered mountain hut Gogles Alm. Once there, follow the steep path behind the hut and continue to the catered mountain hut Galfun Alm. Once there, descend in the direction of Piller.
E5 Piller – Verpeilhütte

This long and demanding stage starts at Piller. Hike in the direction of Fuchsmoos and further on to the hamlet of Lachwies. Just before you reach the houses, a narrow path forks off to the left and leads to the catered mountain hut Aifner Alm within approximately 2.5 hours. It crosses several forest roads. Once there, continue hiking along the panoramic trail in a southern direction enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. For the next 2 hours approximately you will stay on an altitude between 2,000 and 2,200 metres until you reach the catered mountain hut Falkaunsalm. From there, a high route, the so called Dr Angerer Höhenweg will take you to the catered mountain hut Gallrutt Alm within ca. 1 hour. Remain on this route, which will now get more strenuous and exposed. After another 3.5 hours of hiking you will reach the catered mountain hut Verpeilhütte as your destination for the day.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN WENNS / PILLER
DAY 2: NATURE PARK CENTRE AT GACHENBLICK – VERPEILHÜTTE
Hiking distance: ca. 20 km
Elevation gain ascent: ca. 1,400 m
Elevation gain descent: ca. 950 m
Hiking time: NP Centre – Aifner Alm 1.5 hrs
Aifner Alm – Falkaunsalm 2.5 hrs
Falkaunsalm – Gallruttalm 1 h
Gallruttalm – Verpeilhütte 4 hrs
Total hiking time: 9 hrs
Overnight stay: Verpeilhütte
Sights: Along the Dr Angerer high-level trail with magnificent views of the striking mountain silhouette of the Small and Large Dristkogel peaks and the Gsallkopf peak. The wild and romantic Verpeilhütte.

DAY 3: VERPEILHÜTTE – KAUNERGRATHÜTTE
Hiking distance: ca. 5 km
Elevation gain ascent: ca. 1,100 m
Elevation gain descent: ca. 250 m
Hiking time: Verpeilhütte – Madatschjoch 3.5 hrs
Madatschjoch – Kaunergrathütte 1 h
Total hiking time: 4.5 hrs
Overnight stay: Kaunergrathütte
Sights: Aperes Madatschjoch [ridge] on over 3,000 m and first view of the Watzenspitze peak with its hanging glacier.

DAY 4: KAUNERGRATHÜTTE – TIEFENTALALM / NEUBERGALM
Hiking distance: ca. 13 km
Elevation gain ascent: ca. 800 m
Elevation gain descent: ca. 1,600 m
Hiking time: Kaunergrathütte – Steinbockjoch 0.5 hrs
Steinbockjoch – Mittelberglesee 2 hrs
Mittelberglesee – Neururer Berg 1 h
Neururer Berg – Arzler Alm 3 hrs
Arzler Alm – Tiefentalalm 1 h
Total hiking time: 7.5 hrs
If staying overnight at Piösmes the same hiking time applies as if staying overnight at Tiefentalalm.
If staying overnight at Neubergalm add 1 h to overall hiking time: 8.5 hrs.
Overnight stay: Tiefentalalm or Neubergalm or accommodation in Piösmes.
Sights: The beautiful Mittelberglesee [lake] has a rare turquoise colour and the beautiful high-level trail with panoramic views of the Hohe Geige peak and the Glaciers of Pitztal and Ötztal.

DAY 5: TIEFENTALALM / NEUBERGALM – SÖLLBERGALM (accommodation in Wiese)

Hiking time Tiefentalalm – Neubergalm 1 h
Neubergalm – Mauchele Alm 3 hrs
Mauchele Alm – Söllbergalm (no accomodation) 1 h
Total hiking time: 5 hrs
If staying overnight at Piösmes add 1 h ascent to Tiefentalalm.
If staying overnight at Neubergalm, hiking time to Söllbergalm only 4 hrs.
Descent to Wiese (district of St Leonhard), add ca. 1.5 hrs.
Transport from Söllbergalm to Wiese with Taxi Kirschner (+43 664 1448620)
Cost each way 50 Euros for 4 people; 10 Euros per person for more than 4 people.
Overnight stay: Accommodation providers in Wiese.
Sights: Ideal stopping place for a break below the Stallkogel peak with beautiful panoramic views of Pitztal’s Glacier world.

DAY 6: BELOW SÖLLBERGALM – NATURE PARK CENTRE AT GACHENBLICK

Strassbergalm – Kreuzjoch 2.5 hrs

Kielebergalm – NP Centre 1.5 hrs
Total hiking time: 7.5 hrs
Transport from your accommodation in Wiese to a place below the Söllbergalm with Taxi Kirschner (+43(0)664 1448620) Cost each way 50 Euros for up to 4 people; 10 Euros per person for more than 4 people.
If you are not taking a taxi from Wiese to the place below the Söllbergalm, expect a hiking time of 1.5 hrs and 400 metres elevation gain.
Overnight stay: Piller or Wenns or departure
Sights: Fantastic viewpoint at Kreuzjöchl with deep views into the lower Pitztal valley.
