Stage without summit – Day 6: Mandarfen – Mandarfen
Start
Mandarfen (1677m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1677m)
Starting point Mandarfen: the day starts leisurely with a ride up on the Glacier Express. At the top station a trail on the left leads East across the Mittelberg Glacier. Please note that this glacier crossing towards the Braunschweiger mountain hut requires experience in Alpine terrain. The steep descent from the hut, in parts over steps, rewards with fantastic views of the surrounding glacier world. The rocky waterfall trail passes the icefall down towards the catered mountain hut Gletscherstube. Once there, return to Mandarfen following the agricultural road.
Stage without summit – Day 4: Vari. I Piösmes – Plangeroß
Start
Piösmes (1387m)
Finish
Plangeroß (1610m)
Starting point district Piösmes: Go back to Scheibe and then follow a forest road, then a steep forest path for 1.5 hours until you reach the catered mountain hut. This is the first and only optional food station of this day’s tour. Then follow a wide forest road for ca. 1 km until you are beneath the Rappenkopf summit, then turn off onto a steep trail in a Southerly direction. Follow this uphill trail until you reach another fork after approximately 500 metres and again turn in a southerly direction. Here a high-level trail built in 2012 starts, which will remain on approximately the same level between 2,000 m and 2,400m beneath the Seirlöcherkogel summit and in the direction of Neururer Berg summit. Along this section there are several fantastic viewing points in the direction of Mandarfen or the Mittagskogel summit and Pitztal’s glaciers. After approximately 4 hours walking time you will reach the Neururer Berg mountain and cross the Seebach brook via a wooden bridge. Then follow a trail in a southerly direction until you reach Lake Mittelberglsee at 2,446 metres. Once there, continue on a slightly sloping trail that is secured with ropes in the direction of Karlesegg (leads to the high-level trail “Cottbuser Höhenweg”). Then hike via the catered mountain hut Plangeroßer Alm to Plangeroß.
Hochzeiger Ultra circuit
Start
Valley station (1467m)
Finish
Valley station (1466m)
This is a long and difficult trail. From the valley station in Liss run along the tarmac road to Kaitanger. Once there, the trail follows along the Adlerweg [Eagle trail] to the catered mountain hut LeinerAlpe. From there, follow the steep trail to Sechszeiger, passing a pond on your left hand side until you reach the Niederjöchl. Then follow an uneven single trail uphill until you reach the fork in the direction of the catered mountain hut Erlanger Hütte. This is followed by a downhill section of approximately 300 metres in altitude passing the Hinterer Sea Lake on your right hand side. Then follow the markings uphill in the direction of Wildgrat. The trail on this uphill cross boulder section is marked by red dots. Follow the markings all the way to the ridge. Once there you have the option to run on to the Wildgrat summit cross, but please note that you have to be surefooted and unafraid of heights in order to do this! Otherwise follow the markings downhill in the direction of the intermediate station past the Großsee Lake on your left. At the next fork you have the option to run via the Hochzeiger summit and along the ridge downhill to Zollkreuz. At the Zollkreuz junction continue to run in the direction of Zollberg (2.225m). From then on it’s downhill all the way via a single trail to the forest road until you reach the valley lift station in Liss.

Mainzer Höhenweg (high-level trail)
Start
car park between Plangeroß andWeißwald (1601m)
Finish
bus stop Mittelberg (1732m)
From the starting point you walk on the well-prepared track to the catered mountain hut Rüsselsheimer Hütte. After the hut, turn right towards the Weissmaurachsee lake. The track is moderately steep at first, then becomes a steeper climb as you follow on up to the Weissmaurachjoch. Walk on to the southern Puitkogelferner Glacier and over two further Glaciers to the Rheinlandpfalz-Biwak (bivouac). Please note that mountaineers require crampons at the Wassertalkogel. On a partially steep trail continue via the Wurmsitzkogel summit to the Polleskogel summit. Next, climb up to the Pitztaler Jöchl peak and then descend to the catered mountain hut Braunschweiger Hütte. On the way to the Glaciers there are partially secured via ferrate.
Please note that the Mainzer Höhenweg is a high Alpine route. Mountaineers must be confidently sure-footed to master the rock ledge terrain, require grade II rock climbing abilities and good orientation skills. Be sure to not underestimate the length of this trek. As this trek crosses Glaciers, appropriate equipment and advanced mountaineering experience are essential.
