Hike to Gletscherstube mountain hut
Use the car park at the end of the valley in Mittelberg, where a broad service road leads up to the catered mountain hut “Gletscherstube” on 1,926 m. The path to “Gletscherstube” is approx. 2 km long and is manageable with the Swiss-Trac in ca. 30 min. You can admire the end of the valley from the sun terrace. The anteroom of the toilet is accessible by mounting one step, however, the toilet cubicle door cannot be accessed as its door opens to the inside and it can therefore not be locked.
Altitude difference: ca. 120m, maximum gradient 5°
Circular route Pitzenhöfe
Please note that we recommend starting this circular route from Wenns in the direction of St Margarethen, as the forest path is very steep the opposite way around and in wet conditions assistance is required even when using the Swiss-Trac.
The route starts in Wenns following the pavement along the main road until reaching St Margarethen. After passing the M-Preis supermarket leave the main road and turn left into a side street. After ca. 500 metres the street enters a forest path. Depending on weather conditions, the surface of the path can be slippery, and especially the first section of the route is steep. Now follow an easily manageable downhill path through a forest for 1.5 km. There is a bridge after the woodland. Keep left and follow the tarmac road back to the centre of Wenns.
Glacier cross-country skiing trail
Altitude training: between 2,690 m and 2,740 m you can improve your stamina over 50 metres of elevation gain
Infrastructure and facilities: there are changing rooms and space to wax your cross-country skis as well as toilets at Mittelbergjoch railway station.
Course of the trail: Access via Glacier Express up to 2,840 m (please note that special tickets for hikers and cross-country skiers can be purchased). Once on the glacier you can reach the top station of the 6-seater chairlift in around 100 m. This chairlift will take you to the start of the glacier cross-country skiing trail. The access point is behind the bottom station of the the 8-seater gondola lift on 2,690 m and the trail runs in more or less even ascents up to its highest point at 2,740 m. The chairlift will comfortably return you to the mountain station of the Glacier Express.
Talloipe cross-country skiing trail
Hubertus cross-country skiing trail
This is a rather demanding trail with set tracks for classic skiing and set skate skiing tracks in places. It meanders over 7.5 km in length through the partially thick forest areas. After approximately 2 km skiers reach a small clearing and the trail runs over a demanding ascent to the “Harbeweiher” pond. After a short loop around the frozen lake and a further ascent, the highest point of the cross-country skiing trail is reached. From there the trail again runs through dense forests back to the stating point. This cross-country skiing trail is ideal for nature lovers with adequate stamina.
Great Harbe circular route
Alte Straße from Wenns to Arzl
Start this route in Wenns (if possible, park behind Pitztaler Hof). From there, the first kilometre is a steady uphill climb on a tarmac road in between houses. You will then reach a forest road with a central grass verge so that only the narrow tracks either side are drivable. The next kilometre continues to be a steady uphill climb, in parts through a forested area and always with beautiful views of the valley. The last part of this route is a steep downhill section where the path is, in parts, hard to navigate. You will then get back to the road where you will find the bus stop.
Pitzenhöfe - Unterleins
Hike to Aifneralm mountain hut
Start this route at the car park near the hamlet of Puschlin. Initially follow a well-prepared forest path. You will cover some altitude on this initial steep uphill section. Please note that you should never leave the main path. It leads past beautiful alpine meadows and after approx. 2/3 of the way, the surface of the path will become a little rougher and harder to navigate. After ca. 1.5 h you will reach the catered mountain hut “Aifner Alm”. The hut itself is accessible via a ramp, however, after rainfall the path leading up to it may be washed out in places. The toilet can be accessed by mounting one step. The corridor is very narrow due to a box. The toilet can be accessed by wheelchair but there is not sufficient space for turning circles.
